Researchers at the Neurobiology Institute, UNAM, propose a new paradigm to explain the role of the hormone prolactin (PRL) in metabolism. This proposal, published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, has multiple implications, first that PRL levels considered “normal” should be extended to higher values; second, elevated PRL levels clasified as “hyperprolactinemia” should not neccesarily be considered as abnormal but may represent a physiological response to a high metabolic demand; and third, that drugs elevating PRL levels should be studied as therapeutic alternatives to treat obesity and its comorbidities.
